Pillow Fight - NYC 2009

Getting off the train and walking up the stairs, I was greeting with a flurry of down feathers floating in the air through the financial district. As we approached the NYSE, thousands of people were swatting one another in a sea of white pillows protesting Wall Street bailouts.

This was New York City's 4th annual Pillow Fight Day!

Pillows flew as thousands of people converged on Wall Street for a giant urban pillow fight.

It wasn't complete chaos. There were a few guidelines to ensure a safe and fun pillow fight for everyone.

+ Soft pillows only!
+ Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once.
+ Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras.
+ Remove glasses beforehand!
+ Do not abandon your pillow at the location.
+ Dress in business suits, demand your bailout check.

New York was one of 109 cities taking part in the festivities, organized by newmindspace, a group devoted to free public gatherings.

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Muhammad Yunus. In 2006, He, along with Grameen Bank had the honour of being the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below."

An amazing and articulate speaker; Dr. Yunus outlined his vision for a new business model that combines the power of free markets with the quest for a more humane world—and told the inspiring stories of companies that are doing this work today. 'Social Business' was the term he used to describe his ideas.

He related the story of the genesis of his ideas:
In 1974 we ended up with a famine in the country. People were dying of hunger and not having enough to eat. And that's a terrible situation to see around you. And I was feeling terrible that here I teach elegant theories of economics, and those theories are of no use at the moment with the people who are going hungry. So I wanted to see if as a person, as a human being, I could be of some use to some people, outside of the university campus where the villages are. Go out in the village, be with the people, see if I could be of any use to anybody even for a day. So this is what I was doing, and as I did for days, I was doing that, I started noticing something very ruthless. This is the operation of money laundering.

People lend a small amount of money to poor people in the village and practically take over the control of their entire life, just for a few cents or few dollars worth of money. It's not millions of dollars people are waiting for, it's few pennies that people were looking for that's not available. So I looked at that and I saw the problem is so serious, so big, but the solution suddenly appeared to me so simple. I thought if I give this 27 dollars from my pocket, the problem of this 42 people is solved. They can take this 27 dollars, pay back their moneylenders, no way they can control their lives anymore. They will be free people. Immediately I did that. I took the money from my pocket, gave it to them, and told them return the money, be free.

And it created such an enormous reaction, they were so happy. Looking at them later on, as I went the next few days, I thought if you can make so many people so happy with such a small amount of money, why shouldn't you do more of it? So I went to the bank. I thought, this was such a simple solution, he would be excited to do that. He said no. Bank cannot lend money to the poor people. I said this is such small money, you'll not miss this money. He said no, it's not the question of the amount of money, it's the principle: Bank cannot lend money to the poor people.

...Now I was becoming kind of stubborn. Why shouldn't they do it? Such a small amount of money. And they're wasting so much money lending money to the rich people who never pay back. Then I learned something from their conversation, I used that. I said, why didn't you accept me as a guarantor? I'm your guarantor. I'll sign any paper you give me. So you save your rules, and I'll get the money. This time it worked, because I'm speaking their language. And the bank manager told me, Say goodbye to your money because it's not going to come back. I said I'll take a chance, I don't know how it'll happen. Then I came up with simple rules to encourage people to pay back and it worked, and that was the beginning of microfinance.

Key ideas I took away from the afternoon:
* Business can have a social benefit where personal profit is not the goal.
* Grameen Bank is now operating in Jackson Heights, Queens as Grameen America with an average loan of 2200 dollars.
* 100,000 beggars are the recipients of loans in Bangladesh. Over 10% of those have left begging with the new skills they have acquired.
* Some multi-national corporations such as Danon are making an effort to be socially responsible by partnering with Grameen and creating a yogurt for children with essential nutrients for health and growth.

His latest book is called A World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism.

Moyogalpa, Nicaragua

I am sitting on the deck of a cargo freighter sailing from Moyogalpa, on the island of Ometepe, to San Jorge. This island is Nicaraguan to the core and insulated from the rest of the country by the sometimes choppy waters of Lake Cocibolca.

I was only there for 24 hours but managed to grasp the immense beauty of the islands two volcanoes (Concepcion & Maderas), the bounty of wildlife and the large agricultural reserves which grow plantain, banana, and coffee bean.

I spent the night at Finca Magdelena, a coffee cooperative established in the 1980's. For $8USD, my brother and I got a private room with a shared shower. Compared to some of the other accommodation we have had, I would say that it was pretty luxurious. Our meals averaged just over $2USD each and the food was fantastic except for the flies which were a constant nuisance.

Right now, I am staring at Volcan Concepcion which rises 1,610 meters above the lake. An active volcano, the slopes of Concepcion are covered with tropical dry forest species like guacimo and guanacaste. There are some very distinctive features that exist due to the volcanoes past eruptions. In 1880, the volcano erupted with such force that lava and smoke flowed out of the crater for nearly a year. It happened again in 1907, 1921, 1924, and most recently in 1957.

A beautiful island with warm people. It's a shame that I only had 24 hours to visit but time seems to be the one factor that I am having the most difficult time controlling.

Bluefields, Nicaragua

There seems to be a trend... Within an hour of arriving in Bluefields, a reporter from the Bluefields Creole News found Adam, Andrew, and I and interviewed us about our time in Bluefields - which at that point had been about an hour.

An interesting town on the Carribean Sea with quite a large Carribean influence. Creole is spoken here in addition to Spanish. We also ended up interviewing him about the culture clash within the local Creole community and the struggle of competing with a successful Spanish Nicaraguan economy.

He interviewed us on a modest VHS-E Camcorder. We interviewed him on a Panasonic HVX 200. He was the only one of us who had an actual television show and a contract with a television station.

We spent the next few hours looking for a 'story' for the documentary we are working on. It wasn't long before we ran into some undergrad students from the University of Virginia who were in Bluefields over the Holiday break to work on several sustainable development projects. We heard about a group of people who were living in the town garbage dump- known locally as the 'Basurera'.

We spent the rest of the day in a neighborhood called '19th of July'. It exists is because of the economy that is generated from salvaging items from the ´Basurera´ that it is situated on. The people who live here are scavengers in the truest sense. Sifting through the discarded waste of their fellow Nicaraguans to try and find a few gems to help keep them alive.

A young boy emerged from the wasteland. He left the group of about 20 scavengers, dogs, and pigs and approached me, opened a bag that he had found and started reciting a list.

He and his sister had rounded up discarded toys to take home and play with. He was excited. He was far more excited than I ever remember being on any Christmas morning growing up.

All of the kids we met lived with their brothers and sisters and mothers. I thought it was odd that they never mentioned their fathers. I was reluctant to ask about it.

That's when I met Rosa Alva Torres. She was one of the fortunate ones who actually had 4 walls and a roof. She shared a single 1 room home with her 4 children and 4 other women. The men were strangely absent.

When I asked Rosa about her husband, she was candid in her response that he had left with another woman. He didn't want the burden of raising 4 daughters and living off salvaged clothes, food and shelter from the Basurera. She hadn't heard from him but she knew he was gone.

This was her story. It was also the story of the majority of women living in the 19th of July. It bothers me. It really bothers me. I find myself with questions about injustice, fate, struggle and endurance.

Most of all - Why?

For a new film I am working on, we conducted interviews with women and children about living on other peoples throw aways, raising a family on ´0´ income, the joy of finding a ´great´toy to play with, sadness at not being able to afford school which only costs $16.25 a month, poverty, happiness, love, and loss.

As we were getting ready to leave, I saw 2 young girls who were about 7 or 8 years old carrying a broken basket that they had found. In it, they were carrying some items they had found in the mountain of plastic, scrap tin, and broken electronics. A cabbage, a few yucas, an onion, a bunch of oranges and a banana. All of these items were over ripe and partially molding. The young girls said that they were carrying this food home so their mother could salvage what was left and they could have a meal.

That was when a young boy ran up from behind, grabbed the completely bruised banana and started eating it. They girls were disappointed because the brown banana was for their mother who was going to prepare a meal it along with the other food they had salvaged.

The 19th of July is the Nicaraguan Day of Independence.

Heartbreaking.

Is it possible to become a national celebrity overnight?

In the past 24 hours, I have managed to be a guest presenter on Repretel Canal 6 on one of Central America's most watched televised festivals, I was featured on the 6 o'clock news, introduced to Costa Rica's biggest names in Bull Fighting- all because I was willing to get up close and personal with some of the countries meanest fighting bulls.

I don't mind taking risks. I often don't even see them as risks. I see them more as calculated decisions where the benefits of a successful execution outweigh a potential failure. This is where I was at last night.

I had heard rumors that the Fiestas de San Jose at Zapote allowed people with no previous bull fighting experience to get in the ring with bulls who weighed in the range of 450-500 kilos and were mean to the core.

I was the perfect candidate, I thought. I had no previous experience. I wanted to fight a bull. I met all the requirements.

I showed up with my brother, Adam and a friend Andrew who had just arrived in Costa Rica a day earlier. Convincing them wasn't hard. We were all up for some adventure.

We showed up early and met Sergio. He wanted to make sure we got as close to the bulls as possible because “Costa Ricans want to see Gringos get hurt. Bad”.

I have to admit. He was freaking me out a bit. He introduced us to the bulls we would be fighting. They were big. Mean. Raw. Intimidating. More than once, I asked myself 'what am I getting into?'

Fast forward a couple hours and I am standing about 20 feet in front of a Mexican Fighting Bull holding a giant white cape. in the middle of a 4500 seat stadium which is being internationally televised throughout Central America.

The bulls eyes are locked with mine. We are both focused on each other. The bull has done this before. I, on the other hand only had a 10 minute crash course from a retired bull fighter named Sergio. I am scared. I am questioning why I decided to do this. I want to get out of this but I can't. It's too late. The bull already has me in his sights. I'm the target.

The bulls hoof grinds the dirt and he runs towards me. I'm focused. At the last moment I drop the cape over the bulls head. His focus changes from me to the cape and I run. Fast. This happened 4 times last night. 3 of those times with Adam. I get the feeling that the crowd was a little disappointed that the bull didn't drive his horns into my chest and pin me against the wall.

It was a rush of adrenalin and even though I managed to escape the wrath of the bull, my legs ache. Bad. My toes are bruised from jumping and hitting the wall so many times.

My friend Andrew wasn't so lucky. He was gored and tossed over the wall by a bull. Chanel 6 interviewed him as well and he became a bit of a celebrity.

I love a good scare. Something that makes you stop breathing for a moment and causes you to say 'Holy Ssssshhhhhhh.....'

Avenues and Alleyways

Yesterday, I wrapped up post-production on a new documentary about the lives of several people who live in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The Downtown Eastside is noted for high incidences of poverty, drug addiction, prostitution, violent crime, as well as an ongoing tradition of community activism. It has the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rate of HIV infection in the Western world. Vancouver's drug problem has grown steadily worse over the last decade with the most common drugs being heroin, crack cocaine, IV cocaine, and crystal methamphetamine.

This documentary introduces the people who call the Downtown Eastside their 'home'.

The Weakerthans // Deer Lake Park

Today, and for the last 5 years, The Weakerthans have maintained the title of 'Best Band in the World' in my mind.

John K. Samson is possibly one of the most important individuals in modern Canadian independent rock, being an alumnus of Propagandhi and current front-person of the Weakerthans, and consistently known for connecting the lines between personal and political better than most.

There are few bands that will make my arm hairs stand on end, send a shiver through my spine, and cause a tear to emerge from my eye.

Feist // BC Legislature Lawn

Feist's gorgeously lilting voice and her quirky love songs sound like they were meant to be heard under an open sky, with the sliver of a moon hanging above the stage.

They are, for the most part, songs of pastoral romance and pure emotion, some of them focused on the natural world and all its beauty. The venue, therefore, was an idyllic setting for the music.

The glaring sun dipped behind the trees moments before the Grammy-nominated singer took the stage, filling the big borderless space with her voice and the strong forceful beat of When I Was a Young Girl, off her 2004 album, Let it Die.

With Feist all dressed in white, the mood was set for a rather mellow sunset cruise-type evening.

Her often tinkling, sometimes loungey sounds seem to have the effect of a great generational equalizer, with teenaged daughters joined by their mothers, near-retirement couples on their own, lots of twenty-somethings and more than a few knee-high fans who are likely big fans of Feist's recent appearance on Sesame Street.

The BC Legislature is located in our Provincial Capital - Victoria, British Columbia.

Pirate Podcast!

On the final weekend of June 2008, Victoria’s scenic Inner Harbour provided the backdrop for this years Tall Ships Festival featuring over two dozen tall ships from around the world.

We were able to walk the decks, touch the massive timbers, look up through the rigging at the sky, and turn back the clock to a time when our city's future was being built by ships like these.

Check out this podcast which was filmed on 'The Bounty'. I think there was a mutiny on this one at some point in time.

Gulf Islands - Day 3 - Telegraph to Maple Bay

At 7am my alarm sounded and I was joined by the rest of the crew for a french toast breakfast. The morning was spent mapping courses and bearings. I have been wanting to spend more time on mapping and this morning was a great opportunity to sit down with the others and understand some of these basic navigation principles.

Around noon, as the bay hit an ultra low tide, I walked across The Cut to Kuper Island. We needed to wait about a half hour for the tide to rise to our keel wouldn't hit the bottom as we exited the harbour. During that time, I spotted my first sea otter of the journey which was on shore searching for food.

The winds were pretty light as we left so we motored until they picked up. After raising the sails, we practiced some crew-over-board drills in Stuart Channel. Then, with the sails raised and our stern pointed south towards Maple Bay. The narrow passage south is covered from sea to sky with evergreen trees on high mountains of over 1000'. Just above the rocky shore, the tree line starts and never stops. At times I could see secluded cabins that someone had built which, I imagine, are only accessable by a boat. Seabirds flew accross the water and alongside our boat as we sailed down the channel. I was at the helm for this portion of the journey and sailed us into Birds Eye Cove where we docked for the night.

Gulf Islands - Day 2 - Montague to Telegraph

After spending the morning practicing docking techniques, we said goodbye to Montague Harbour on Galiano Island and motored northwest through Houston Passage to Wallace Island and had lunch in Princess Bay.

It was low tide, so Andrew and I took the dinghy outside the bay to explore the rocky ledges that were painted with purple and orange starfish. Nearby, we also ran into 4 seals who curiously watched us in our explorations. A short hike allowed me to explore some of the walking trails and rocky ledges on both sides of the narrow islet that seperates the bay from Houston Passage. It is such a peaceful feeling to have the sounds of a cityscape replaced with birds, woodland creatures, and the ocean lapping up against the rocks.

Our departure from Princess Bay allowed Captain Doug to give us a brief tutorial on navigation and course plotting. As we rounded the north tip of Saltspring Island, the winds began to pick up so we put out the sails and headed northwest through Stuart Channel to Telegraph Harbour on Thetis Island. As we docked at the Telegraph Harbour Marina around dinner time I spotted 2 bald eagles soaring in the tall spruce, fir, hemlock and cedar trees.

I cooked up some salmon steaks for the crew and shortly after, Dr. Steve, Bruce and I took a walk up the picturesque Pikey Point Road to Preedy Harbour. It was the first time I had smelled fresh cut grass this year. The view from above the harbour gave us a great view of the smaller islands in the channel. The ocean was calm and so were the winds. As we walked by a small herd of cattle, I couldn't help but notice how relatively undeveloped Thetis Island is compared to the other Gulf Islands. Bruce said the island reminded him of taking sailing trips with his family in the 1960's because not much had changed. The shops were independently owned and operated, ice cream shops still served the same great flavours, and the architecture made it seem as though there had been no new development in 40 years.

It must have hit up to 18 degrees today. I had on a t-shirt for about an hour while we were sailing.

Gulf Islands - Day 1 - Tsehum to Montague

At 10am this morning, after some basic theory and last minute preparations, Captain Doug, Dr. Steve, Bruce, Andrew and I left Tsehum Harbour on the Saanich Peninsula on a 5 day sail through the southern Gulf Islands. We motored out of harbour through some turbulent currents, passing a number of pacific harbour seals who seemed to be welcoming us to into their territory. I also saw a number of porpoises playing in the currents.

Our first destination was Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island where we pulled in just to have a snack and stretch our legs. Our exit from harbour took about an hour as we took turns at the helm tacking, this time with the wind ahead of us.

From Ganges, we set sail (hitting speeds up to 7.5 knots) to Montague Harbour Marine Park on Galiano Island where we anchored and Doug, Steve and I were able to enjoy a colorful sunset on Shell Beach with some teenagers who were camping in the area. While we were watching the sunset, we realized that we were standing on a midden - an elevated piece of land that once acted as a waste disposal area for Coast Salish aboriginal peoples. Under our feet were millions of tiny pieces of white shell that have been there for thousands of years. There were also remnants of a village just around the peninsula from us and right in the harbour was an ancient rock carving of a raven whose feature were slowly being softened by erosion.

I tried to imagine 3,000 years of culture that had left no scars and very little evidence, except for the telltale white shell that spill onto the beach.

Los Angeles

I am patiently waiting at Amoeba Music on Sunset Blvd. In Los Angeles for the Flight Of The Concords to start their In-Store Performance. Arriving alone has its benefits. I was able to cut to the 40th position in line out of about 5000 people.

I just drove 6 hours from Berkeley.

I spent last night aboard the 1969, 39' sailboat 'Gennao' in San Francisco Bay. After dinner and great conversation at Sian Thai Restaurant, Ted and Melissa Biggs were kind enough to invite me to spend the night before driving back to Los Angeles for the weekend. Ted is curently working on his MA in Folklore at Berkeley. He lives with his wife, Melissa, at the Berkeley Marina as liveaboards. Melissa is 8 months pregnant and they are planning on remaining on-board after Madison is born. I am truly envious of their living situation.

My first 2 nights in SF were spent urban camping. I caught a small cold when I woke up in a church parking lot in Oakland on April 22nd.

My interview on American Idol

Earlier today, Darren and I, along with some friends from LA, Huntington Beach, and Australia went to a live taping of 'American Idol Tonight'. Its the pre-show warmup to 'American Idol' and aires on the TV Guide Channel. I am not a fan of the show and I have still never seen an episode in its entirety but American Idol still wanted to get my thoughts on camera. Zion

It's 10:45pm and I am laying in my sleeping bag behind a US Post Office in Rockville, Utah (Pop. 267).

After leaving my brother Sheldon's house in Pleasant Grove, Utah around 10am this morning, I drove south along the I-15 in search of Zion National Park on the Colorado Plateau. I was unsure of what to expect as I drove through a nice variation of weather systems for the next 245 miles. Snow, hail, rain, clouds, sunshine, snow again and then sunshine again.

First stop: Kolob Canyons on the Northwest tip of the park. A great introduction to Zion's with enormous finger canyons and sheer cliffs of well over 1000 feet. The Park Ranger recommended I spend less time here and more time at the south entrance of the park if I was looking for rugged beauty.

40 minutes later I arrived in Springdale and took the Ranger's advice to hike a trail called 'Hidden Canyon'. A 3 hour / 2 mile round trip steep climb up 850 feet. Plenty of cliffs and slot canyons.
It wasn't until the hike down and 4 hours later that I realized I had taken a wrong turn about 3/4 of the way up the 'Hidden Canyon' trail and completed the 'Observation Point' hike instead!

Unbelievable. Breathtaking.

High on the east rim of Zion Canyon, the 4 mile (8 round trip) trail ends on a slender peninsula overhanging the valley floor offering spectacular views on 3 sides. The climb was 2,148 feet which was almost 3 times my initial plan and it took 4 1/2 hours to complete. That wouldn't be a bad thing if I had not started it until almost 6pm!

I has planned to do a 3 hour hike and return by dark. I ended up being at observation point past sunset and had to hike down most of the 2,148 feet by flashlight.

It was well worth it.

By the time I got down, it was 9.30pm and very dark. I saw the lawn at the Post Office one town over in Rockville and thought it would be a great place to escape the campfire smell and the noisy campers.

The sky is incredibly bright with stars. The only sound I hear is the wind in the trees. I am staring into the heavens and marveling at the natural beauty that I have seen today. I think I will do it again tomorrow.

Stories from the Revolution

In the city of Santa Clara, Cuba, Judith and I wandered over to Parque Vidal - the geographical, social, and commercial nucleus of town. There were alot of people out tonight - couples strolling, children playing, and local vendors selling food. We met a man named Francisco who sells peanuts for 1CUP ($0.05CDN) each. He had been working all day and decided to sit with us and tell a few stories. Francisco is 81 years old. He lives with his 109 year old mother and wife who is just younger than himself. Every day, he walks 2.5km to the center of town to sell Peanuts. The rations that the government distributes are not enough to live on for the entire month so he must do what he can to bring in more money to care for his elderly family. His age reflects the things he has lived through. For an hour, he recounted stories about the revolution of the late 1950's and early 60's.

We sat on a park bench looking across the street at the government run radio station and the Hotel Santa Clara Libre. Francisco related the story of Che’s fighters facing off with Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista’s snipers who holed up in the hotel. He also spoke about change - about when he was young, only people of European ancestry were allowed to enter the park and those with dark skin or who were descendants of slaves had to remain outside.

For a man of his age, he had an amazing memory. He spoke with such detail. He remembered the exact prices for common staples in the 1950's and could vividly remember how the city looked back then as he related it to us.

It was one of those experiences that makes life so special.

As our chance meeting ended, we offered to give him a ride so he didn't have to walk the 2.5km home but he gracefully declined saying that he enjoys the walk as it gives him time to think, to enjoy the scenery, and to remember.

Night Riding

Aaron, Adam and I decided to purchase the Y2Play Pass at Grouse Mountain this year. The mountain is open for night Skiing & Riding until 10pm every night. I managed to snap some photos at dusk with my Canon SD 750. I used an ISO80 and had my camera on a mini tri-pod with a 10 second self timer.

I have had a Season's Pass at Mount Seymour for the past four years or so. The actual Mount Seymour is about a 30-40 inute hike behind Brockton Chair. You can only get there by hiking. The weather was perfect today and I couldn't pass up the chance. It was to warm out to be wearing a jacket so I did most of the hike in a t-shirt. I made this video on the hike.

Diving at Norris Rocks

Last Monday (January 21), Josh and I headed up to Union Bay from Victoria and took a dive charter through Union Bay Dive & Kayak. We took a 20 minute boat ride to the southern tip of Hornby Island to a place called Norris Rocks. There are hundreds of California and Stellar Sea Lions there to dive with. The weather was fantastic. Blue Skies and unlimited visibility both in and out of the water.

Whytecliff Seals

I spent some time at Whytecliff Park (near Horseshoe Bay, BC) this summer after I discovered that there were a few Pacific Harbour Seals that liked to spend time at a popular scuba diving spot called "The Cut". It is accessable from shore and only a minute walk from the parking lot. We were able to get close enough to them on the rocks to even touch them. This video demonstrates how to love seals. I was filming, Aaron Sadler is loving, and James Lewis is chilling in the back.

We politely declined which prompted an angry tirade about 'stupid Canadian's'. My patience quickly wore thin and and this video ensued. We caught him later in the day chasing a couple of elderly ladies who didn't want a tour either!

On a December morning, Nicola Corck and I met up early at Picadilly Circus to take some photos and get some video footage. You might notice some shots of Trafalgar Square and the Parliament as well. I made this video mostly of footage caught that day and some footage taken a year or two earlier. We are back in the capital to stock up on supplies before we begin the next chapter of our journey. This past 10 days has taken us to some of the more remote regions of the country and the top 3 highlights include

1. Tyler's malaria scare which turned out to be just the negative effects of drinking the tap water.
2. Being robbed by our rifle toting game scout who was supposed to be the person protecting us. Ironic, isn't it?
3. Being chased out of the Dogatu village at Konso and having stones and mud thrown at us.

Addis is much colder than you would expect. As the 2nd highest capital city in the world, the weather can be very interesting sometimes. For example, it is hailing golf balls right now and I am wearing a sweater. The south was hot, dry and dusty. You can also buy 11 bananas there for 13 cents.

No matter what anyone tells you, don't drink the water in Ethiopia. Seriously.

Mursi Tribe

In the Lower Omo Valley, there is a nomadic tribe called Mursi. There culture has remained relatively unspoiled for thousands of years. There main source of income has only recently changed from cattle herding to tourism.

Mursi women are famous for wearing lip plates made of clay.

In Addis Ababa, one of the major slums is called Merkato. We met a great guy named Yidenkachew who showed us around. He shares a house made of mud and straw with about 10 other people and his sister. I took this shot with my camera out front of his home.

It seemed that the drug of choice in Ethiopia is something called 'Chat". I never saw any women chew it but it was really popular with the men. In this video, a young man chews 'Khat' in Merkato, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Khat , pronounced "cot" or "chat" and also known as qat, gat, chat, and miraa, is a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa. Believed to originate in Ethiopia, it is a shrub or small tree growing to 5-8 m tall, with evergreen leaves 5-10 cm long and 1-4 cm broad. The flowers are produced on short axillary cymes 4-8 cm long, each flower small, with five white petals. The fruit is an oblong three-valved capsule containing 1-3 seeds.

I have arrived safely. After a day and a half in different airplanes and airports, My friend, Tyler McBain and I arrived in Addis Ababa close to midnight last night. We spent the day exploring the capital city and met some wonderful new friends who invited us into their home to share injera and lentils - one of the typical Ethiopian dishes. Their names were Yidenkachew Seifu and his sister Kidist. They live in a small house with twenty other people - afternoon tea was crowded! Making friends hasn't been a problem and we have been received with open arms. I can't express what an honor it is for me to have the experience of making the friends I did today and having them share with me what little they have. We shared our musical talents and talked about social issues and politics affecting the country. Just like any other large city, it is congested and polluted but full of life.

I am heading south tomorrow to make my way to the Lower Omo Valley in South West Ethiopia in search of some lip plates, loin cloths, and and body scarification. We have been doing a crash course in Amharic since English doesn't seem to be widely spoken here.

This past week was spent aboard the Oosterdam Ship for the YPO Cruise to Alaska. It was an amazing time with stops in Juneau and Ketchican. It was unbelievably beautiful! The landscape was so raw and relatively untouched. As we sailed into our various ports, salmon were literally jumping out of the water and in many rivers and streams that I came across, There were so many salmon that one could just reach in and pull out a salmon with their bare hands. Well, After spending some time in the holy city of Varanasi, India, I decided to head north to a place where the weather was not 42 degrees and dusty. Varanasi was great though. I studied the Sitar and made some amazing friends... I couldn't bring myself to take a dip in the Ganges though...

After seeing the carcasses of cows, goats and dogs floating in the river, I don't care to increase my karma that bad, although thousands of locals find it just fine to bathe there everyday... My journey north took me across the Indo-Nepali border into the Katmandu Valley. I will spend a few days here doing some trekking and visiting various temples and shrines. It is nice to be at a higher elevation where the air is cleaner and the temperature is pleasant. I have spent the last few days in Southern Nepal bathing with elephants and visiting some remote villages in the Chitwan Region. The people here seem to smile more than in India...

While traveling through the Pantanal region of Brazil, my horse was startled by an Cayman Alligator. I was thrown from the horse into a murky swamp, infested with Anaconda. It was scary, but I found my horse again and continued my journey... covered in mud.

I have been in a fairly remote region of Brazil called the Pantanal, near the border of Bolivia. It was about 26 hours by bus from Rio de Janeiro. I went trekking for 3 days there and learned tons about the ecosystem there. I had the chance to see many new and interesting animals like toucan, macaw, capybara, caiman alligator, parrot, parakeet, deer, stork and tons more. I got to hold an anaconda and it wrapped it self around my hand... I'm ok though.

The wildlife in the Pantanal is amazing. There is so much of it. I went piranha fishing as well. The teeth on those things are very sharp and big. We had catfish, dourado and piranha for dinner a few nights ago. Piranha is boney, but definitely worth the experience. I kept the whole jaw.

One of the highlights was a sunrise walk at about 5 am to see the sun come up over the Pantanal. It was so colorful and the birds get so loud in the morning at sunrise with their song. Now, I am in a town called Bonito, about 4 hours or so from the Paraguayan border, which is where I am headed in just over an hour from now. I will go through the town of Ponta Pora on the Brazilian side, try to go to church somewhere in Paraguay tomorrow (which will be nice in Spanish) and go see one of the natural wonders of the world, Iguaçu Falls, which has parts in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. depending on time and money, I would like to get to see a bit of Argentina as well. I hear the beef there is amazing. I am learning quite a bit of Portuguese. It comes fairly easy having Spanish as a base.

At the beginning of the trip, I went to Rio de Janeiro. Absolutely amazing! The views from the Christ Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf are breathtaking. If you can overlook the slums, it is really one of the most beautifully captivating cities in the world. There is lots to say, but I should start again on my journey to Paraguay....

Dominican Ducks

While visiting the town of Cabarete on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, My friends, Steve and Aaron, decided to secretly steal the rental car that was on my name and drive to drive to a neighboring city to rendezvous with some girls we had met the night before. Upon finding this out, I was furious. Late that night while Steve and Aaron slept, I crept outside and caught a duck with my bare hands. I took the duck and threw it on Steve's face while he was deep in slumber... Steve wasn't happy but Tyson and the neighborhood kids had a good chuckle.

Well, After driving from the east coast of the Dominican republic via the south shore, along some of the most beautiful waterfront property I have ever seen, I found my way inland with my Nissan Sentra and did some real exploring in the jungle. There are some beautiful villages with plenty of culture. As long as I am not stuck behind a herd of cattle in the middle of a dirt road, I am happy....The driving on the highways is nowhere near as crazy as in the city. Dodging all the dead dogs and cattle which line the road is a real task. Santo Domingo was unbelievable. Today, I am on the north Coast, just east of Puerto Plata in a small surfing village called Cabarete. my skin is rather pink so I will have to stay out of the sun for a little while. A steady diet of rice, beans, and chicken is completely fine with me. I think I am the only one of the guys I am traveling with that hasn't been visiting the bathroom more than 5 times before lunch....

The cool thing about France is that you never have to worry about finding a smoking section in a restaurant because everywhere is a smoking section! Just standing in the street leaves one smelling like an ashtray. The French have a crazy fixation with smoking... I guess they think it's still cool. Somehow I wound up in Paris with my parents and 2 younger sisters... We climbed half way up the Eiffel Tower by stairs... saw some old cathedrals, visited Notre Dame's gargoyles looted a castle and spent way too much money on baguettes and pastries. Its super cold here and I don't think the sun ever shines.

Pinching pennies in order to make funds for the trip last longer, we found a bungalow near the beach for $1.50 a night. Great deal! Or so we thought until we woke up the next morning and Jared's backpack was crawling with thousands of red ants.

I came to Israel with my two brothers, Sheldon and Aaron. We visited Jerusalem during a violent period of the Intifada. On our first night in Jerusalem, we was staying in a hostel. We decided to go to bed early but were awoken around 11pm to the sound of explosions and gunshots outside their window. My brothers and I hid under our beds to avoid any possible shattering glass and to hide should there be any military raids. We fell asleep afraid for our lives. In the morning, we found out that the commotion was a local wedding celebration.

Well, Here I sit in beautiful Antigua, Guatemala at an internet cafe. This has been quite an adventure so far! I left on Monday morning from Calgary, and went to Houston, TX. I met up with my friend Katrina about 2 hours later and spent the afternoon in Houston before our flight was to depart at 7pm that evening to Guatemala City. I wish it would have been that simple. I was on the flight, in my seat, and we had not yet pushed back when the gate agent approached me and gave me the boot. I was flying on standby and was last on the priority list, so that happens sometimes. We weighed our options and decided, because the flight loads were so heavy, to try some alternate city's.

We spent that night in an airport chapel, converted into a hotel for that night only it seemed and tried in the morning to get on flights to Belize City, San Pedro Sula, San Salvador, and Guatemala City. Unsuccessful! We barely got on a flight to San Salvador, El Salvador at 4pm that afternoon. Happy were we!

I met this nice lady on the plane who got here nephew to give us a ride to a nearby hotel where we spent the night and cleaned up a bit. It was well needed. On Wednesday, we trekked to the smelly and crowded downtown San Salvador where we caught a chicken bus to the Mayan ruins of Tazumal in northern El Salvador. The 2 hour bus ride cost about 67 cents US. Definitely a cultural experience! The bus we took was a converted American Elementary School bus. We packed 3 people on seats made for two kids and had people standing and babies crying and it seemed everyone wanted to sell me chicle. Awesome!

After a day of sight seeing at the ancient ruins of Tazumal, we headed for the Guatemalan border. It was guarded by men wielding rifles and shotguns. It wasn't a place I wanted to mess

After crossing the Rio Paz into Guatemala, like before we were surrounded by lush tropical rain forests, cattle covered streets, and natural beauty that was purely indescribable. I even saw vultures picking at a carcass of a dead cow. night soon fell upon us and as tired as I was, I took a nap.

We arrived in the city of Guatemala around 9 pm and called our contact. His name is Enno and was extremely helpful. He found us a place to stay with a guy name Mike. He teaches music therapy at the schools in Guatemala. We jammed on bongos and guitar for a good part of the evening until we retired.

Upon rising in the morning, we took a dirty city bus to the main bus station downtown where we caught another bus to beautiful Antigua, Guatemala. This is a very colourful city. The people are extremely hospitable and friendly. We met up with our friend Heather in the park and spent the afternoon together. There was a torrential downpour this afternoon. The hail came down almost as big as ping pong balls. I have never seen it pour that hard. The loud clash of thunder was almost frightening. I think I will really like it here.

Quite a few people here dress in traditional Guatemalan clothing. I guess it's more authentic that way. Things are great. I am happy and I don't have the runs yet. I have made a good number of new, interesting friends, and still have a week to go. Wonderful! around at.

I started working for Air Canada as a flight attendant in April, 2000. By the end of the year, I was making regular trips overseas to Asia and Europe. These are some photos that were taken on a few different trips during the fall of 2000. One memory I have that is not so fod is when I was mugged by a London prostitute and her pimp while I was walking back to my hotel after watching the London Theatre Company perform Les Miserables. This was the first of a string of muggings and scams that would occur in various countries over the following years.
